Sustainability

We are constantly exploring ways to operate sustainably. We capture technical data and video footage, track our petrol and power usage and are currently implementing a rubbish versus recycling initiative. We have a technical engineering team dedicated to testing our new and advanced Packhouse machinery for optimal performance.

We understand that creating a sustainable business means investing in our people – and that’s why we continue to give back to our local community. We support mental health initiatives that empower people and have supported the local Franklin Fight Night charity boxing event; a black tie gala evening where 24 brave boxers took to the ring in support of the ‘fight from within’ – the fight against the black dog (mental illness). The event raised more than $50,000 to contribute towards a purpose-built mind health facility in Pukekohe to support our local people.

We recognise the pressures that long hours of seasonal work has on our people and have established a Wellness Committee with a goal of having happier, healthier employees. Our packhouse management team has focused on re-jigging our shift structure to provide greater work/life balance for our staff.

In addition, we’ve teamed up with our local Work & Income New Zealand team to assist in giving New Zealander’s the skills and qualifications to move them back into the workforce and get enthused about building their careers.

Continuous Improvement

Punchbowl PackCo is committed to continuous improvement and best practice focused on efficient production, carbon footprint and community involvement.

Punchbowl has six cool stores – two built in 2017 and 2018 and another one set for construction in 2019.

Other construction developments include a mezzanine floor for the packhouse to account for future business growth. Plans are afoot to establish an on-site backpacker and seasonal worker accommodation.

LEAN

Punchbowl is on a journey of continuous improvement which involves eliminating business waste, implementing detailed standard operating procedures and learning to problem-solve as a wider unit. Each department has its own LEAN consultant who works with the team to educate our staff in alignment with the 6S LEAN principles of safety, sort, set in order, shine, standardise and sustain, and in building strengths to creating team-based solutions.
